Kiwi Ad Envy #8 – The Rugby World Cup Madness begins

In 60 days, the 2015 Rugby World Cup starts and the sponsor advertising has already kicked off. This week’s Kiwi Ad Envy looks at three of the front runners and lets you pick a champion.

1. Adidas “Force of Black”

Adidas has released an epic TV campaign which eloquently Stoppress described as “part nature documentary, part Dragon Ball Z”. Volcanoes, storms and spaceships launching are mashed with footage from the 2011 RWC. This drips of a huge brand with a huge budget, frankly it couldn’t be more masculine! It’s been received well by fans on Twitter and will surely pump up passionate All Blacks fans, however, the still of Richie McCaw is a little terrifying!

2. NZ Rugby Union “Belong Manifesto”

The NZRU has also released a campaign encouraging teh nature to get behind the All Black. It’s the complete opposite from the Adidas approach, showing a softer, more inclusive side to our rugby culture.

3. Heineken “Rugby World Cup 2015”

Heineken is a worldwide sponsor of the Rugby World Cup. Their global campaign features rugby legends Jonah Lomu and South African World Cup winning captain John Smit. They will also join other well-known rugby names in an “elite panel of Heineken Legends” who will be producing content in the lead-up and during the event. It’s a typical classy Heineken ad but I’m not entirely sure I got the storyline. My husband commented it looked like the protagonist was bribing the referee.
