Vote for me! Election Advertising in NZ

Election advertising is an interesting discipline given it’s extremely prominent for a few months every three years, can be subject to intense public scrutiny, and is regulated by a specific set of rules that aim to create transparency. With the New Zealand general election coming up on the 20th of September we’ve now entered the regulated period (20 June to 19 September). Within this period, there are limits as to how much candidates and parties can spend on ‘election expenses’ such as advertising.  Read more

Is your advertising good enough to be stolen?

A couple of weeks ago the “Stop before you start” anti smoking campaign by GSL Promotus took out the Friday Ad Envy with their creepy but effective TV spots. Their unappealing smoking buddy has been rolled out to other mediums, where he’s been more popular than you’d expect!

The Friday Envy – The week’s best ads (#8)

Each week we put the three best Kiwi ads from the previous week head-to-head against three international campaigns. Last week kiwi charity Brother’s in Arms won the most votes with their unusual charity campaign which actually gave away money in order to lure in new sponsors. This week Air NZ releases a synchronized skiing video, Virgin Mobile Australia is turning food posts into real meals, some truly feral beards and vending machines are hijacked to dispense toothpaste.

The Friday Envy – The week’s best ads (#7)

Each week we put the three best Kiwi ads from the previous week head-to-head against three international campaigns. Last week’s Ad Envy was a close race resulting in a tie between Hell Pizza’s “Kangaroo Ransom” and Burger King’s “Proud Burger”. While both fast food brands the two campaigns couldn’t be more different! With a lack of major campaigns launching in NZ this week it may be the first time the international ads take out the Friday Ad Envy. The international contenders include an Lego oil spill, underwater selfies and an apology for spamming.

To check out the background for the feature – plus to add your two cents on what you’d like to see covered take a look at the launch article. We’ll be talking to some of the country’s best social media practitioners from a wide variety of companies and perspectives, I’m fascinated to see what will come out of the process!

The Friday Envy – The week’s best ads (#6)

Last week we saw the anti-smoking campaign “Stop before you start” take over 90% of the votes in another landslide victory for the Kiwi ads. In this week’s ad envy previous winner “What We Do In The Shadows” makes another appearance, Hell Pizza ransoms kangaroos and Burger King releases a “Proud Whopper” with a surprisingly deep message. Kiwi ads have reigned supreme for the past 5 weeks – will an international entrant take center stage this week? Don’t forget to vote for you favourite ad at the end of the post.
